The native name of this area was Wologumk, 'a deep gully or hole in the river'. Du Gua deMonts named the place Port Mouton, 'sheep port' in 1604 after a sheep jumped overboard, nearly drowned but was saved by the crew which ate it. The English version was Port Mutton, pronounced Port Matoon.(Nova Scotia Place Names by David E. Scott)
In 1604, the first Christian Service was held in South West Port Mouton.
Something of interest/amusement can be seen on your way to the cache. Shortly after the South West Port Mouton signage, from the road, look on the roof of house # 931.
