Geocache Description:

It is possible that the ferry may be cancelled at short notice due to weather (wave swell or high winds).

If this occurs we will try to arrange another meetup place in Auckland, leaving a message on this cache page.

A group of Westies have arranged a weekend of fun on Tiri Tiri Matangi Island ("looking to the wind" or "wind tossing about").

We would love to turn this into a bit of an event, and show off what a great place this Island is.

Some of the activities on the Island includes:

  • Spending time with other geocachers
  • Doing a guided walk ($10)
  • Swim, eat, walk, explore
  • A visit to the Islands gift shop
  • Indulge in the complimentary tea/coffee at the Visitor Centre
  • Read information panels about the Island and its wildlife in the Visitor Centre
  • Find as many birds as you can (because we like to find things)
  • Look at the Lighthouse, lighthouse buildings, foghorn, and signal mast

Date:  25th March 2017 (Saturday)

Time: 12.00 till 12.30pm

Meet: Outside entrance to the Tiritiri Matangi Visitor Centre

How to get there: Book early, this ferry can be fully booked -  360 Discovery (09 307 8005) or website

Cost: Auckland to Tiri $70 return, departs 9am (+ $10 for guided walk) or Gulf Harbour to Tiri $55 return, departs 9:50am (returns to Auckland 3.30pm)

Map of the island here

Click on the link if you want to find out more about this wildlife sanctuary, and the relationship between DOC, Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi (Inc) (SoTM) and Māori (Kawerau a Maki and Ngati Paoa). Ngai Tai and Murutuahi also have ancestral links with the island.

A visitor information pack can be found here.

  • There is no phone available for use on the island apart from in an emergency.

  • Mobile coverage is good, although patchy in places. It is usually good on the grass outside the visitor centre.

  • There is no food for sale on the island (except chocolate). When on the ferry some food and drink can be purchased. Any food, or lunches taken to the Island must be packed in a lunch box or sealed plastic bag.

  • There is a visitor centre and shop (souvenirs and cold drinks) at the top of the hill near the lighthouse (open 11 am to 3 pm approx).

  • You will need to take your rubbish home with you.

  • There are three public toilets on the Island (+ toilets on the ferry):

    - Along the Hobbs beach track (left of the wharf, a short walk past the public shelter)
    - Far end of Hobbs Beach (near Kawerau track and Cable Road)
    - Below the lighthouse area towards the bunk house.

  • Smoking is restricted to the concrete area at the wharf and outside the visitor centre.

  • Keep to the tracks (helps protect plants, birds or any scientific studies on the Island).

Hope you can attend, bring your lunch and your caching stories.
