The original name for Milton was thThe Falls. This name was in common use until about 1830 when the name was changed to Milton. The last vestige of this name can be found at the Old Fall Road wihich was the original road to the falls from Bristol which is now part of Liverpool. The falls that gave the community its early name were important to the settlement as they gave a great location for sawmills. As early as 1761 there were 3 sawmills on the Mersey River at this location. There was a large lot of common land set aside for the purpose of milling. Much of the land below the falls was infilled with the sawdust from the mills where it settled out of the river.
The first mills at The Falls were build by the Freeman family. The first later was owned by Simeon Perkins and the last was built by Colonel William Freeman.
The river was dammed at the area of the falls to provide headwater for the mills. These were wooden dams built of cribwork. There is no record of the number of dams at this location, but the last wooden dam went out in the winter in the 1960's. It was an extremely cold winter and the ice built up on the dam causing too much pressure an the dam failed. The new cement dam was bult shortly after.
Later on there was a show factory that operated until the 1970's. all of the buildings are now gone. The old bridge that spanned the river from about 1900 was replaced in 2016 with a new 2 lane bridge. many changes have taken place here but the falls remain.
