3 września 1939 roku na nadwiślańskiej łące, zwanej Łężnik w Brzeszczach, w potyczce z okupantem zginęła grupa 11 polskich żołnierzy złożona z szeregowych pięciu żołnierzy z 16 tarnowskiego Pułku Piechoty, dwóch z 20 krakowskiego PP oraz 3 z innych nierozpoznanych jednostek Wojska Polskiego.

W dwa dni później 5 września 1939 roku zostali oni pochowani na miejscowym cmentarzu. W symbolicznym miejscu, wskazanym przez prof. dr hab. Kazimierza Bielenina, został wkopany brzozowy krzyż, a na nim zawisła tabliczka z nazwiskami poległych.

On 3rd of September 1939 on the Vistula meadow, called Łężnik in Brzeszcze, a group of 11 Polish soldiers were killed in a skirmish with the enemy. It was composed of rank-five soldiers from the Tarnów 16 Infantry Regiment, two of the 20 Krakow PP and three other unidentified units of the Polish Army.

Two days later on 5th of September 1939, they were buried in the local cemetery. In a symbolic place indicated by prof. Assoc. Kazimierz Bielenin, was buried wooden cross with the names of the fallen.
