Geocache Description:

Falcons (Falco) are a genus in the Falconinae subfamily of Falconidae and most have a long tail and tapered wings.
A main characteristic of the falcon is its hook-shaped upper beak, curving downward to a sharp end called the tomial tooth. This shape helps the falcon bite through the cervical vertebrae in its prey in order to kill it.
Their eyes are relatively big with a dark iris. As with most birds in the Accipitridae family, the plumage covers the legs to a trouser-like length and softer, lighter feathers cover the ankle.
Falcons have 15 cervical vertabrae. The common kestral, for example, when sitting on its perch keeping watch for prey, can turn its neck at a 180-degree angle. Even without turning its head, the position of the falcon’s eyes gives it a 220-degree field of view. This genus of birds can be found worldwide and includes 39 species. The common kestral, the red-footed falcon, the Eurasian hobby, the peregrine falcon and the saker falcon are five falcon species of breeding birds that are found in Central Europe. It is also not unusual to spot the merlin in Central Europe as a guest from the northern hemisphere during the winter months.
In 1941, falcons finally found habitat in Uzwil. Although, here they are referred to as „Hawks“, have a blue-yellow plumage and are mostly active during the winter season.
