FSC-2016 Nemours Estate

Cache Details:
If the gate is open, please park in the lot. You do not have to go inside the gated grounds.

Description:
Located on 200 acres in the Brandywine Valley, the Nemours Estate includes a 77-room mansion and the largest formal French gardens in North America. The mansion was built by Alfred I. duPont in 1909 for his second wife, Alicia. The mansion is 47,000 square feet and 5 stories high and includes a bowling alley along with other modern day amenities for the time. The gardens were created with the gardens of Versailles in mind. And despite local folklore, the stone wall with glass on the top surrounding the property, as you can see near cache location, is simply a part of the design of the property. Nemours is named after duPont patriarch, Pierre Samuel duPont de Nemours who served at the courts of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. Also located next to the Nemours Estate is the A. I. duPont Hospital for Children which is operated by the Nemours Foundation. The hospital originally opened in 1940 as the Alfred I. duPont Institute, a pediatric orthopedic hospital.
If the gate is open, please park in the lot. Tours of the estate are available Tuesday – Saturday 10 am – 5 pm and Sundays 12 pm – 5 pm.
