Geocache Description:

Boy Scouts Trail - Twisted Upslope

IMG_0179

I've been told I'm twisted and confused by my caching friends for many years and could never figure out why they would be so kind with their words. I just have nice friends that speak their minds. What would I do without them or better said what would they do without me. I could think of many boring and depressing things they can do without me.

On the trail of the Boy Scouts Trail or according to Google Earth it is named Dawson Saddle Trail. The trail was built in 1982 and is the by way from the Pacific Crest Trail down to Highway 2. From here the Pacific Crest Trail to the east leads you to Mt .Baden-Powell and to the west, Mt. Islip. The cache is about 1.75 miles at up the Boy Scouts Trail from Highway 2 and is considered a moderately easy hike with 900 foot elevation gain. From the cache you're only another 300' elevation gain to the top of Mt. Throop.

The hide is up slope about 30-40 feet from the trail. The best approach to GZ would be from an angle and not directly up which is easy to do but difficult to do if you know what I mean. Take a gradual incline as you approach the GZ from 100 or so feet away. This will make your life easy. It's a tin sized enough for some swag. Best time for the easiest approach to the cache from Highway 2 would be from Spring to early Winter before snowfall. In early Spring you may find it closed at Baden-Powell Trailhead parking where it may take Caltrans to clean up the Highway from the snow melt debris. In that case you'll take the 6+ mile one-way trek along the PCT from this trailhead parking. Parking along the highway you will need an adventure pass. If you're in Wrightwood, you could a grab a one-day $5 pass at the only gas station in town or at the super market across the way.
