The 'Salte Welle' in Saltwell Park is a Grade II listed building (no. 1249007) which was constructed in 1872 as a drinking fountain and is presumably how Saltwell and Saltwell Park got their names. The wells in Gateshead were often named after the quality of their water, so the water from this well must have tasted salty, hence salte well. There is a pious engraving above the basin which reads:
"Whosoever drynketh of thys water
shall thirste agayne
But whosoever drynketh of the water that
CHRIST
shall geve him
shall never be more a thirste
but the water HE shall geve him
shallbee in him a welle of water
springyng up unto everlastynge lyfe."
And another story, in the title of this cache, that's not the letter p. It's actually the upper case Old English letter thorn which is the correct way of writing "Ye" as in "Ye Olde". There's an interesting article on io9 about this which you can read here.
