Description:

Built in 1936, and designed by A.I’s architect son, the A.I. DuPont Carillon was the largest reinforced concrete tower in the world!
The 210-foot-tall carillon tower stands off the Nemours mansion museum grounds (now) but within the original surrounding walls on the grounds of the adjacent children’s hospital. The tower is constructed of pink and white marble with Brandywine blue rock steps and outfitted with 31 bronze bells. The carillon is still in working order and plays a number of songs daily, watched over by 4 stone eagles at the summit of the tower.

A.I. Dupont, his wife Jessie and her brother, Ed Ball are all buried in the Du Pont Carillon tower. The tower also has a six-passenger elevator, which is rarely open to the public. Four concrete eagles stare from the tower's four corners, the du Pont arms in concrete ornament the severe Renaissance facade. RECTITUDINE STO ("By rectitude I stand") is the motto carved above it.

The Westminster chime strikes on the quarter hour, I hope you can time your visit around the bells! PLEASE be respectful of the grounds.
