Il s'agit d'Élisabeth de Wittelsbach, épouse deFrançois-Joseph 1er de Habsbourg, impératrice d'Autriche et reine de Hongrie, affectueusement surnommée « Sissi ».
Le meurtrier, Luigi Lucheni (26 ans), voulait à tout prix tuer un prince européen. Il avait jeté son dévolu sur le comte de Paris mais celui-ci avait reporté son déplacement à Genève. Un journal de la ville commet alors l'imprudence de briser l'incognito de l'impératrice, qui promenait de ville en ville sa neurasthénie.
Sur la scène du crime figurent plusieurs ressortissants de différentes nationalités. Elles mêmes,représentent des pays qui conclurent une alliance historique qui contribua au déclenchement de la première guerre mondiale.Par opposition,une deuxième force issue d'une autre alliance, se trouvera mêlée au conflit.

This is Elisabeth of Wittelsbach, wife deFrançois Joseph 1 Habsburg Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary, affectionately known as "Sissi". The murderer, Luigi Lucheni (26 years), was desperate to kill a European prince. He had set his sights on the Count of Paris, but he had postponed his trip to Geneva.
