Piazza Unità d'Italia è la piazza più estesa d'Europa che si affaccia sul mare. Inizialmente si chiamava piazza San Pietro, poi piazza Grande, poi piazza Francesco Giuseppe. Il nome piazza Unità lo assunse quando Trieste fu annessa al Regno d'Italia dopo il 1918. Nel 1955, quando Trieste tornò nuovamente all'Italia con lo scioglimento del territorio libero di Trieste, la piazza prese il nome attuale. Nel 2005 è stata ristrutturata completamente. La fontana dei Quattro continenti è stata posta nella sua posizione originaria davanti all'ingresso del municipio e, sul lato mare, è stato installato un sistema di illuminazione con led luminoso blu a ricordo dell'antico mandracchio, interrato nel 1863.
Osservando la piazza dal lato mare, in senso orario, si affacciano sulla piazza questi palazzi: il palazzo della Luogotenenza austriaca, ora sede della Prefettura, caratterizzato da mosaici che ora raffigurano lo stemma della casa sabauda che sostituiscono quelli originari che raffiguravano lo stemma imperiale austro-ungarico; poi il palazzo Stratti, dove si trova il caffè degli Specchi, storico caffè triestino; il palazzo Modello; il municipio sulla cui torre municipale ci sono due automi bronzei, "Mikeze e Jakeze" che fanno udire i loro rintocchi allo scoccare delle ore; palazzo Pitteri, il più antico palazzo della piazza, il palazzo Vanoli, sede di un prestigioso albergo e il palazzo della compagnia di navigazione Lloyd Austriaco di Navigazione, poi Lloyd Triestino, ed ora sede della Regione.

Piazza Unità d'Italia is Europe's largest square overlooking the sea. Originally, it was called Piazza San Pietro, then Piazza Grande, then Piazza Francesco Giuseppe. It was named Piazza Unità when Trieste was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy after 1918. In 1955, when Trieste was annexed to Italy again with the dissolution of the free territory of Trieste, the square took its current name. In 2005 it was completely renovated.The Fountain of the Four Continents was placed in its original position opposite the Town Hall's main entrance and, on the sea side, a blue led lighting system was set up in remembrance of the ancient small sheltered harbour, filled in 1863.
Looking at the square from the sea side, from left to right, the square is overlooked by the following buildings: the palace of the Austrian lieutenancy, now the seat of the Prefecture, characterized by mosaics that now depict the coat of arms of the House of Savoy that replace the original ones, which depicted the Austro-Hungarian imperial coat of arms; then Palazzo Stratti, where the historic café Caffè degli Specchi is situated; Palazzo Modello; the Town Hall, the tower of which is topped by two bronze figures, "Mikeze e Jakeze", that strike the hours; Palazzo Pitteri, the oldest building in the square, Palazzo Vanoli, which houses a prestigious hotel, and the palace of the Austrian Lloyd shipping company, then Lloyd Triestino, and now the seat of the Region.
