Geocache Description:

St George, the San Francisco of the East is covered with steep hills overlooking NY Harbor, many that cars cannot drive up. if you walk around the neighborhood you will see that many of the sidewalls are actually steps. This public side walk is almost forgotten, very steep and very long. With a newer car road leading up the back side of the hill, this side walk is not really used, but there are still 3 houses on the hill side that use these steps as there only access.

At the top of this staircase is the neighborhood of Ward Hill, the smallest official neighborhood on Staten Island. This Hill peeks at almost 410 feet above sea level and is named after Cable T. Ward (nephew of NY Governor Tompkins) who owned the hill, and build the Ward Mansion in 1835. His mansion is now a landmark (waypoint included).

commercial photography locations

Today this stairwell is hardly used and very neglected, Sad to see the litter here. When I was a kid I would shovel snow for the City and these stairs where one of the sidewalks I always had to do lol. The cache is in a typical spot for the type of infrastructure present.
