Geocache Description:

Gephyrophobia

The cache is not located at the posted coordinates. To find this cache, you will need to review the information below about some interesting reasons why one might have gephyrophobia, research to find the missing data and solve for the coordinates below:

North Coordinates: A° B.CD

West Coordinates: E° F.GH

A= Last two digits in the year of the bridge tragedy MINUS one (1)
On a cold December night in Hopewell, Virginia, fourteen people met their death in the icy waters of the Appomattox River when an Atlantic Greyhound bus plunged through an open drawbridge. Hundreds of men worked all day in sub-freezing temperatures and a snowstorm that virtually became a blizzard to rescue the bodies.
To find A, take the last two digits in the year this bridge tragedy happened and SUBTRACT one (1)

B = Last two digits in the year this took place MINUS five (5)
During the American Civil War, confederate soldiers planned to burn the lower timbers of the 160-foot Platte River Bridge, leaving the top looking intact. At 11:15 p.m. on a moonless night, the westbound passenger train from Hannibal, Missouri, to St. Joseph started to cross the bridge. The supports cracked and gave way. The locomotive flipped, falling 30 feet into the shallow river and bringing with it the freight cars, baggage car, mail car and two passenger cars with 100 men, women and children.
To find B, take the last two digits of the year that this occurred and subtract 5.

C = Numerical day of the month PLUS one
In October of 1989, a pedestrian bridge in Arkansas with as many as 50 people on it collapsed, killing at least five people and injuring 18, after the crowd rocked the span back and forth. According to a bystander, ''The cable on the upstream side broke and the bridge fell to one side. The other cable broke and the whole thing came down.'' The structure was completely destroyed.
To find C, take the day of the month that tragedy happened and ADD one.

“D” = Last digit in the year of the collapse.
During rush hour on December 15th, the Silver Bridge collapsed, resulting in the deaths of 46 people. Two of the victims were never found. Investigation of the wreckage pointed to the cause of the collapse being the failure of a suspension chain, due to a small defect 0.1 inch deep.
To find D, use the last digit of the year that this collapse occurred.

E = Last TWO digits of the year of the collapse
The Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Florida collapsed when the freighter MV Summit Venture collided with a support column during a blinding thunderstorm, sending over 1,200 feet of the bridge plummeting into Tampa Bay. The collision caused six cars, a truck, and a Greyhound bus to fall 150 feet into the water, killing 35 people.
To find E, use the last TWO digits of the year that the collapse occurred.

F = Last TWO digits of the year PLUS 20
The Upper Steel Arch Bridge, also known as the Honeymoon Bridge or Fallsview Bridge, was a bridge which crossed the Niagara River, connecting Niagara Falls, Ontario with Niagara Falls, New York. It was located about 500 feet upriver of the present-day Rainbow Bridge. A sudden wind storm on Lake Erie sent lots of ice over the falls resulting in nearly 100 feet of ice pushing against the bridge. Thousands of people who had come to watch the bridge’s demise. It collapsed in one piece into the river with no casualties.
To find F, take the last TWO digits of the year of the collapse and ADD 20.

G = Numerical day of the month
In July of 2003, a strong 94 MPH tornado swept away the Kinzua Bridge, snapping and uprooting nearby trees, as well as causing 11 of the 20 bridge towers to collapse. There were no human deaths or injuries. The state decided not to rebuild the Kinzua Bridge, which would have cost an estimated $45 million. Instead, it was proposed that the ruins be used as a visitor attraction to show the forces of nature at work.
To find G, use the numerical day of the month on which the collapse occurred.

H = Number of months the bridge was used before it collapsed
The 1940 Tacoma Narrows Bridge, the first Tacoma Narrows Bridge, was a suspension bridge in the U.S. state of Washington that spanned the Tacoma Narrows strait of Puget Sound between Tacoma and the Kitsap Peninsula. On November 7, 1940, at 11:00 a.m. (Pacific Time), because of a physical phenomenon known as aeroelastic flutter, a wind-induced collapse occurred. The only fatality was Tubby, a black male cocker spaniel.
To find H, use the number of months the bridge was used before it was blown away.
