The earliest record of the church in Codicote was its dedication in 1108-14, but it is doubtful that any of the original parts of the church remain. The oldest parts of the building seem to be the west tower and south wall of the south aisle, but there are no architectural clues to suggest that these date to earlier than the fifteenth century.

References suggest that the south or Dacre chapel seems to have been built in or around 1312. Several bequests were made to the church in the fifteenth century, mainly to do with the upkeep of the building. However, much of this work was later destroyed by the 1853 ‘restoration’. (Got to love the Victorians!).

The pulpit is the only old fitting in the church, dating to the early seventeenth century.

In the graveyard is a wooden ‘graveboard’ marking the grave of John Gootheridge, whose body was taken by grave robbers in 1824 before being recovered and reburied. The board has clearly been replaced several times over the centuries.

Today the church supports a small local congregation and is welcoming to visitors and new members. Sheep graze the graveyard, which makes for an interesting addition to wedding photos (as we can attest!).

(Church history gleaned from british-history.ac.uk and other sources).
