Sunny Places for Shady People

Dynamite was invented by Alfred Nobel and was the first safely manageable explosive stronger than black powder. Nobel originally sold dynamite as "Nobel's Blasting Powder" but decided to change the name to dynamite, from the Ancient Greek word dýnamis, meaning "power". Nitroglycerin by itself is a very strong explosive, but is extremely shock-sensitive and degrades over time to even more unstable forms, which makes it highly dangerous to transport or use. Dynamite combines nitroglycerin with adsorbents and stabilizers, rendering it safe to use, but retaining the powerful explosive properties of nitroglycerin. Dynamite is usually sold in the form of cardboard cylinders about 8 inches long and about 1 and a quarter inches in diameter. Over time, regardless of the absorbent used, sticks of dynamite will "weep" or "sweat" nitroglycerin, which can then pool in the bottom of the box or storage area. While the risk of an explosion without the use of a blasting cap is minimal for fresh dynamite, old dynamite is extremely dangerous.

When Ace Tupper arrived in Sacramento in 1849, one of the first things he saw was a tent with a sign reading "Shuvels - Pickaxes - Xplosives." Ace quickly stocked up on various mining tools and equipment and got a particularly good deal on some old dynamite the proprietor had stashed away. Loaded down with everything he needed, Ace then proceeded toward the neighboring hills to seek his fortune, not noticing the clear liquid dripping from the box of dynamite. When he had reached a very dense part of woods completely exhausted, Ace stopped for a brief rest and put down the box, hard. Too hard. The explosion toppled almost every tree within a two hundred yard radius and blew Ace over 25 feet into the air. Luckily, as he was falling back to earth, his suspenders managed to catch on the one lone tree left standing. Miraculously, Ace was mostly unharmed and was able to climb down from the tree with only minor scratches and ringing ears. From then on, the location of the near catastrophe was known as "Ace's Place." Over 150 years have passed and it's still a sunny spot surrounded by numerous downed trees nestled in the thick woods.
