The Sign of the Four
In this mystery, Sherlock Holmes is presented with a murder in which the victim's body is left with a note reading "Sign of Four." Holmes discovers that this phrase refers to four partners who are attempting to recover a stolen treasure long since hidden away in a house. "The Sign of the Four" brought many firsts to the Sherlock Homes tales: The Baker Street Irregulars, a group of London street urchins and occasional assistants, make their debut. One of the main characters, Mary Morstan, goes on to marry Holmes' associate Dr. Watson. Once married, Watson of course moves out of the shared apartment at 221B Baker Street. Also referenced in this story is Holmes occasional drug use which was legal at the time, although severely frowned upon by Watson.
CACHE: Look for The Sign of the Four and you will certainly be in the neighborhood of the small house hiding the container.
