The Adventure of the Dancing Men

This is one of only two Sherlock Holmes cases where Holmes' client dies after seeking his help. Mr. Hilton Cubitt visits 221B Baker Street and gives Holmes a piece of paper with a mysterious sequence of stick figures written on it.The figures are deeply troubling to his wife, Elsie. She is American, and before their wedding, she asked her husband-to-be to promise her never to ask about her past, as she had had some “very disagreeable associations” in her life. Mr. Cubitt swore the promise and, being an honourable English gentleman, insists on living by it. After Cubitt leaves, Holmes shows the piece of paper to his apprentice Ace Tupper and explains that is a substitution cipher and cracks the code by frequency analysis. The message conveyed by the dancing figures is a particularly alarming one. Holmes and Tupper rush Cubitt's home only to find him dead of a bullet to the heart and his wife gravely wounded in the head. Inspector Martin of the Norfolk Constabulary believes that it is a murder-suicide, or will be if Elsie dies. The culprit is actually Abe Slaney, a criminal from Chicago and former fiancé of Ellsie's who has come to England to woo her back. It was he who sent the threatening encoded messages to her. Holmes lures Slaney back to the murder scene by sending him a coded message of his own. Slaney then admits to shooting Hilton Cubitt while in an arguement with Elsie. After he fled, the distraught Elsie then shot herself. Elsie eventually recovers from her serious injuries. Slaney goes to jail. Holmes and Tupper do a happy dance.
