Geocache Description:

a Time Flies Travel Company (TFTC) geocache

A Buck an Ear

During the Golden Age of Piracy, governments would frequently offer rewards or bounties for the capture of a pirate. In the event a pirate was not captured alive, the government required proof that the pirate had indeed been dispatched. Since sailing home for weeks with a decomposing body on board was not at all desirable, it became standard practice to cut off the dead pirate's ear before burying the scoundrel at sea. The ear would then be presented to the government as proof that the bounty hunter had gotten his man. A bounty for a pirate captain might be a small fortune in gold while lesser pirates and crew members might amount to only a single dollar gold coin. Thus, common, low-level scallywags were often referred to as "buck-an-ears."
