The Black Barnacle

from Cacheapedia:

Black Barnacle

The Black Barnacle's keel was laid October 12, 1715 at the Wayside Shipyards near Rome, Georgia. With a length of 34 feet and beam of 12 feet, the ship was designed for speed and agility in close quarters and shallow waters. Her maiden voyage took place November 7, 1715 when she sailed to the port city of Savannah. Five days later, disaster befell the Black Barnacle when a fast approaching geocacher (shilo) collided with the ship causing extensive damage on her port side. A later investigation determined that, while the collision occurred mid-afternoon with sunny skies and excellent visibility, the crew of the Black Barnacle had no warning and, therefore, little or no time to react and avert the catastrophe. However, their quick actions did prevent further calamity and injury to the large crowd which had gathered dockside for a pirate conclave known as Going Coastal.

Emergency repairs were made to prevent the sinking of the Black Barnacle which would have resulted in the disruption of shipping lanes to and from the port. While the damage was extensive, investigators authorized the Black Barnacle to return to the Wayside Shipyards for additional repairs. The ship was dry-docked until November 4th of the following year when she again sailed to the same Savannah port where she was previously struck. However, upon arrival and inspection by port authorities, the Black Barnacle was classified as no longer sea-worthy.

On Sunday, November 11, 1716, the Black Barnacle was dismantled for the last time and hauled away as scrap. One section of her hull was preserved and later presented to Shilo to memorialize the now-famous event. This historic piece can often be viewed at geocaching events where it is placed on exhibition. (see trackable)

NOTE: As a result of this collision, a new term was coined and added to the Maritime Incident Investigation Manual (see below)

shi-lo'd [shahy-lohd] verb
to be struck by a rapidly moving object with little or no warning, causing calamity to that which is struck and extreme merriment and glee to those witnessing the incident once realizing no personal injury has occurred.
usage:  I was shilo'd once!
