Many insects spend at least part of their lives living in or on water. They are a diverse group, with many insects recognized as having an aquatic life-stage. Some common insects found in wetlands are dragonfly nymph, beetles, mayflies and caddisflies to name a few. Aquatic insects are important components of wetland ecosystems. They are food for many other animals, including fish and birds. They are also important for their role in cycling nutrients and carbon through wetland systems.
