This old rock fence type, is often called a "slave fence", but such is not usually the case. My great grandfather (and family) built this one, about 100 years ago, when they lived nearby. They had 17 kids. In Rutherford County, it was common practice to buy 25 acres, then clear the rocks off half of it, by plowing them up and then throwing them on the other half, use them for a house foundation or use them to build a fence. That left maybe 10 to 15 acres to farm.
