The stage coaches which served the gold hungry hordes swarming west were an important link in the chain of early California travel. The yellow dust from the diggings had to be hauled, men transported and precious mail brought back to homesick miners. As a class, the stage drivers were genial, sociable and accommodating. Maybe rough in exterior and lacking polish, but possessing a fund of wit and humor that was hard to beat. The article below gives you a description of two such stage drivers from Tuolumne County, a man with a half a foot that he used to get him drunk and one of the first known women stage drivers.  This cache is placed at the location of Priest Station which began as a stage coach stop in 1849. If you came up Hwy 120, or worse Old Priest Grade, and your car was having an issue you can imagine the strain it put on the horses pulling that stages.
