Geocache Description:

LOST PLACE - NORLEY ANTI-AIRCRAFT BATTERY

This lost place is an old anti-aircraft battery built to counter the perceived threat of Soviet manned turboprop bombers carrying atomic bombs to large conurbations during the Cold War.

At the location there were a battery of four gun emplacements arranged in a shallow arc with two main reinforced concrete buildings in support.

One of the buildings was the emergency generator and weapons maintainance store and one was the command post.

Both buildings survive with all structural elements complete and are situated approximately 180m to the west of the gunpits.

Further remains may exist in the current wooded environs of the site.

The four gun emplacements are now under a low mound. The above ground concrete baffle walls were destroyed by explosives in about 1970 when the site was being prepared for a tree nursery, but the underground hydraulic recoil mechanisms are thought to survive in situ.

Please do not go exploring inside the lost place as it has ancient monument listing.

To find your way to the lost place please park at the parking coordinates (Park and start of path) and walk along the trail until you reach the steps, climb the steps to the top of the bank and then turn left and proceed to the waypoint marked entrance, from here you will see the lost place.

In order to find the cache please go to the listed coordinates, observe the front of the concrete building (Stores) and complete the following observations:

A = the number of vents on the front of the building.

B = the number of doorways on the front of the building.

C = the number of windows on the front of the building.

Now wander over to the waypoint listed as Ops Room and note the following:

D = the number of doorways present.

E = the number of vents you can see.

F = the number of circles you can see.

The cache is located at:

N53 14.A+1,B-3,C+5.

The cache has been placed here with the kind permission of Historic England.

Good luck and happy hunting around this wonderful lost place.
