St John’s Church is the resting place of Roald Dahl’s step-sister, Astri, father, Harald, and mother, Sofie. Their grave is marked with an impressive pink granite cross against the boundary wall.
Matilda was published in 1988 and has since been adapted into an audio reading by Kate Winslet, a feature film directed by Danny DeVito, a BBC Radio 4 programme narrated by Lenny Henry, and a 2010 musical on the West End. In 2012, Matilda was ranked #30 among all-time children’s novels in a survey published by School Library Journal.
