The Dahl family lived in Cumberland Lodge after Harald Dahl passed away. They lived here from 1921-1929. The lodge is now a Nursery and Infants School.
Published in 1975, the BFG is an expansion of a short story from Danny Champion of the World. The book is dedicated to Dahl’s late daughter, Olivia, who died age 7 from measles encephalitis. The inspiration for the titled character was Dahl’s friend, Walter Saunders. It became an animated TV adaptation in 1989 with David Jason voicing the BFG. In 2016, it became a live action film directed by Steven Spielberg.
The location is wheelchair accessible but assistance may be required to reach the cache.
