CACHE: Parking close to cache on side of road. Can find cache while still standing on road gravel.
HISTORY: Once upon a time this area was dotted with homes and a couple of cabins. One such cabin sat on the banks of Watz Lake. When the land was sold to the state for a recreation area, the cabin sat vacant. Eventually people started using it as a place to hang out. It was a well known party spot in the late 60's and 70's. One year one of those parties burned the cabin down, but the chimney remained. It stayed intact for many, many years until it fell in what some believe in the late 90's. Many old pull tab beer and pop bottles can be found around what's left of this chimney, made of rock, brick and mortar.
The location of the chimney is noted by a waypoint in case you'd like to visit. It's just a tad NW of the parking area, maybe 100 feet into the woods or less, the rubble sitting in the hillside. If you do visit this site, there's an earth cache back there as well as boat access to Watz Lake. I have drove my little car back on many occasions, although I suggest driving at your own risk. The road is a DNR track and not maintained well, and it's hilly, cuvry and sandy. It's a nice hike if you decided to walk in instead. Certain times of the year there's open hunting back there. Best time to see it is in the spring before it greens up.
