Geocache Description:

Another Roadside Attraction Geotrail

North Carolina - Cape Hatteras Light

There is nothing better than a good road trip: driving down the open road, eating at tiny roadside diners, going 150 miles out of the way to take a selfie in front of … the Peachoid water tower! Oh Say, can you see … me with the world’s largest frying pan?

This geotlail honors those unique, odd, bizarre, fun, historic, campy, weird, and just downright interesting roadside attractions in North and South Carolina. The caches aren’t meant to be hard, it is a power-trail after all. None of the caches are hidden at the posted locations - but answer the question correctly and you will have a working set of coordinates. All of the hides are preform bottles.

The Cape Hatteras Light is located on the Outer Banks as a part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.  Built in 1871, the 197-foot lighthouse protects one of the most hazardous sections of the Atlantic Coast, known as The Graveyard of the Atlantic.  The light has a distinctive and famous black and white stripe day-mark pattern.  The light also holds another distinction, it was moved from its constructed location to its current location in 1999 due to beach erosion.  The NPS lifted the entire lighthouse, put it on a train rail and very slowly moved it 2,900 feet over the course of 23 days. Climbing the historic Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is a unique experience. The climb is self-paced and provides views from the tallest brick lighthouse in North America. The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is normally open from the third Friday in April through Columbus Day. Climbing hours are 9 am to 4:30 pm daily. Tickets are required. The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse has 257 steps from the ground to the balcony level, equal to climbing a 12-story building. The narrow stairs have a handrail only on one side, two-way traffic, and a landing every 31 steps.
