We have been taking our family here since they were little kids, but now that they are grown we recently hiked all the trails. Found the North Dorset Cemetery one of the larger cemeteries in Dorset with over 100 graves. Earliest: 1811; latest (date of burial): 1997. It is at the at the end/beginning of the Meadow trail. Check out the cemetery, then seek the geocache!

Suggest you hike the Rich Woods Trial, to the Upper Trail then the Meadow trail - you will get a nice view of the cemetery coming down the trail. The Dorset area became well known for its marble quarries by the early 19th century. The first commercial marble quarry to open in the region, and likely the country, was opened in 1785 by Isaac Underhill on Mt Aeolus. The quarry age of Dorset spanned some 130 years. In the early years, marble was cut for uses like headstones and hearthstones. One of the more unique features from this bygone era is the North Dorset Cemetery located on the hill overlooking the park’s contact station and parking lot. The cemetery has many headstones made of local marble. Welcome and Florenz Allen are buried here. Welcome and his son Florenz owned and operated a large iron furnace and foundry across the street from the Park entrance. They ran it from the 1840s to the early 1890s, and they made stoves, plows, parts for railroads, and many other items.
