North Carolina - Jockey's Ridge State Park

There is nothing better than a good road trip: driving down the open road, eating at tiny roadside diners, going 150 miles out of the way to take a selfie in front of … the Peachoid water tower! Oh Say, can you see … me with the world’s largest frying pan?

This geotrail honors those unique, odd, bizarre, fun, historic, campy, weird, and just downright interesting roadside attractions in North and South Carolina. The caches aren’t meant to be hard, it is a power-trail after all. None of the caches are hidden at the posted locations - but answer the question correctly and you will have a working set of coordinates. All of the hides are preform bottles.

The tallest living sand dune on the Atlantic coast is a premier location for kites, sightseeing and sunsets, with a view arching from the ocean to Roanoke Sound. The wind is constantly changing the shape of the dune.  A visitor center with museum and 360-foot boardwalk with exhibits explain the dune’s ecology and are a gradual entry to the massive dune field. Sandboarding is welcome with permit and hang-gliding is available through a vendor.  A short hike takes you to the top of the dune to a real sand castle. The castle is part of a miniature golf course the dune took over years ago. The walk up the dune is longer and more strenuous than it looks, so take it easy. On a hot day, try going in the morning or late afternoon when the sun isn't as strong sun protection is recommended.  Also, there are sand spurs so be sure to wear sneakers.
