Island Living Traditional Cache

Sure, it may not be a tropical island paradise in the South Pacific or Carribean, but this small island in the Susquehanna River does offer some seasonal vacation camping. While you're in the area, be sure to check out Shikellamy State Park on the other side of the island. This island was once an important meeting place for local native tribes. If you're traveling through the area, you may have noticed that many of the towns and cities are named after one tribe or another. The Susquehanna River itself is named after the Susquehannock tribe, also known as "Conestoga." This tribe was eventually taken over by the Iroquois. This era saw the rise of one of the best known local tribal chiefs, Shikellamy. That is a story ofr another cache. Happy Hunting!
