Geocache Description:

A cache near the site of the former 220 metre Titahi Bay radio transmitter mast.

This cache is hidden in the trees at the western end of Whitireia Park. It would have been under the shadow of the 220m radio mast a few metres from here. That was demolished on 16 February 2016 due to it becoming unmaintainable. Its function has been taken over by the slightly smaller mast visible just east of here but the ruins are still present. There are big concrete foundation blocks encircling the location where the 15 cable stays were anchored.

The park is closed to vehicles after 6pm in winter and 9pm in summer but the cache is only about 200m from the gate which still has pedestrian access. Not recommended at night but can be done if you're keen. You can't park right next to the cache but there is suitable area about 50m away.

Please do not try and enter the fenced off area.

The cache is a small translucent plastic container with log and pencil. Lightly covered by natural camo but not buried.

Videos of the demolition seem to come and go but an interesting videos can be found on YouTube such as this mini documentary.

Nov 2019 update

A new smaller mast has now appeared using the same anchor points as the original. So you will no longer be seeing a disused relic but a new smaller replacement.

Feb 2020 update

The small mast turned out to be just the lower half of a much bigger mast. The new mast appears to be the same size as the one further around the park (which is 137m) but somewhat shorter than the original 220m. The upper sections were installed by helicopter and the final mast uses 4 of the 5 anchors.
