UPDATE: November 20, 2022: The larger container disappeared several times so it is now a MICRO and securely fastened in place. Please do not remove the container, just open it and sign and then close it back up.
UPDATE: DEC. 22, 2018: I replaced the container after the original disappeared. The new container is closer to a small than to a regular, but hopefully it will stay better hidden. It's still an easy grab.
An easy grab near an historical marker. I've driven past here many times but only recently stopped and read the monument. It is easy to miss. There is just enough room to pull off the road at the waypoint.
In the early 1800s oil was known to exist underground. Occasionally while drilling for water the crews would hit oil. This was usually considered a nuisance until scientists reported that kerosene could be manufactured from oil. It wasn't long until the rush was on.
The first well drilled specifically for oil in the United States was near Titusville, Pennsylvania in 1859. The second was near Cañon City, Colorado in 1862. (Although oil had been discovered in a seep near Florence, Colorado in 1860, it was not successfully drilled until 1881.) Be sure to take time to read the monument at the parking waypoint.
The creek across the road was known as Oil Creek. Today it is better known as Four Mile Creek. If anyone knows how or when Oil Creek changed names to Four Mile Creek please let me know or post it in your log.
