Welcome to a prison! Yes that's correct: jail. It is not a silk factory, as written on the sign post, and never was.
--IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR WHOEVER FINDS THIS GC: this is a "self living GC". If you think paper needs to be added or container changed and you are able to do so, please do.--
This building was built during the Italian domain of Rhodes and of the Dodecanesus (1912-1943) and was initially used to store agricultural products and machines. In 1943 during WW2 the Italians surrendered to the Germans and the building where you are standing became a prison. From here many were lead on ships which were shot and sunk with as many as 20.000 Italian soldiers dead.
In the plain behind this building there was an Italian airbase which was destroyed by the Italians before surrendering to the Germans after the armistice of Sep 8 1943. Some daily stories about the war have been told to me by Nonno (grandpa) Giorgio (now in his late 80s who lives in Prassonisi), and my intellectual curiosity pushed me more to explore internal Rhodes rather than coastal bays!
Go explore!
Apologise, the geocache is not accessible to wheelchairs, but if you get to the building, then you can log it as found.
