Geocache Description:

One of a series of caches encouraging the travelling geocacher to explore Metz Road, Chinamans Gully Road, and Old Hillgrove Road into Hillgrove village and back out to Waterfall Way via Stockton Road. On the way there are opportunities to explore the vistas and mining history of the area.


As you drive along this road you will note there are quite a lot of stringy-barks and box-trees along the roadside.

Hillgrove is home to remnant pockets of endangered White Box Yellow Box Blakely's Red Gum Woodland and its derivative woodland. Derivative means the trees are gone but the remant associated grasses and shrubs that go with that woodland type are still there.

In this area the primary tree characterising the woodland are the Yellow Box (Eucalyptus melliodora, below) with some Blakely's Red Gum (Eucalyptus blakelyi), Grey Box (Eucalyptus microcarpa, below) and New England Stringybark (Eucalyptus caliginosa).
