Irishman Creek Station utlises low intensity grazing to produce fine merino wool and also grazes limited beef cows. The station is particulalry famous for its place in history for the development by Bill Hamilton of the Hamilton Jet engine, which revolutionised river travel the world over. The site and associated hyroelectric water works and powerhouse are recognised as an historic site.
The station includes the low intermontane dryland landscape, unique in a world sense. The landscape also encloses slopes across the Mary Range and over to the Lake Pukaki lake faces, with extensive glacial dominated landscapes from historic iceages.
Climate in this area is harsh, dry hot summers and bitterly cold frosts in winter as low as -20C and lower. The run is also split by the canal running from Lake Tekapo to Lake Pukaki, as part of the extensive hydroelectric power network that supplies much of the countries electiricty needs.
The iconic letterbox down the road has also features in numerous artworks and probably millions of photographs- at the time of publishing there is also another cache here.
