Geocache Description:

Ves prečrpani mulj so odložili poleg izliva reke Rižane; tega je nato dež postopoma spral in ostali so le kamenčki in apnenčaste lupine mehkužcev.

Dune of shells

When tourism, nature and economy meet on such short coastline, the conflicts are bound to happen. A result of one of the conflicts is this dune that was made in 1990, when Port of Koper was deepening one of their piers. All the gathered material was then dumped by the mouth of river Rižana. Some of the silt was then slowly washed down by the rain and all that was left were pebbles and limestone shell remains. Locals also say that this is a graveyard of sea shells, but the biologist would disagree, since there are far more snail shells than sea shell shells. More than 230 species of molluscs were collected here – main difference between sea shells and snails is that these only have one shell while sea shells consist of two halves.

The area around the dune is special also for the silt, which offers a unique ecosystem for the plants and animals, especially for the birds. Some only overwinter, others also nest in the area. If we are lucky we can encounter a big and small white heron, swans, and sometimes even a rabbit or two. The dune has two more inhabitants, that are endangered and protected and are very rare for Slovenia and Europe, beetles Clivina ypsilon and Scarites terricola.

During one of our walks in the dune, we have decided to show this part of Slovenian coast to wider audience and set up this cache. As we searched for the appropriate spot, we walked up and down the coastline quite a few times and realized that the sea, amongst all the birds and shells, also brings a lot of garbage. So each time that we went by, we also picked up some trash and dumped it by the parking lot. Since we would like for all of us to keep the sea clean, we prepared an ecological surprise in the cache. There is a “message in the bottle” that is to be obeyed or not, the decision is yours.
