Geocache Description:

Another Roadside Attraction Geotrail

South Carolina - Colonial Dorchester State Historic Site

There is nothing better than a good road trip: driving down the open road, eating at tiny roadside diners, going 150 miles out of the way to take a selfie in front of … the Peachoid water tower! Oh Say, can you see … me with the world’s largest frying pan?

This geotrail honors those unique, odd, bizarre, fun, historic, campy, weird, and just downright interesting roadside attractions in North and South Carolina. The caches aren’t meant to be hard, it is a power-trail after all. None of the caches are hidden at the posted locations - but answer the question correctly and you will have a working set of coordinates. All of the hides are preform bottles.

The Colonial Dorchester State Historic Park, includes the ruins of Fort Dorchester, built in 1757 from an oyster shell-based material called tabby; as well as, St. Georg’s Anglican Church, built between 1719 and 1720.  Also visible are the remains of a shipping dock on the Ashley River, though they can only be seen at low tide. The community was founded in the late 1690’s by a group of Congregationalists from Massachusetts.  In the mid 1700s Dorchester was the third largest town in South Carolina. The town’s fear of a French invasion in 1757 prompted the construction of the fort and a power magazine.  The church was burned during the Revolution and after the war the population began to wane.  The site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
