Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Yorkshire in Bloom Gold award winning York Cemetery, a peaceful place for both the living and the dead to visit, please take time look around and enjoy this unique spot in York.

History

York Cemetery was opened in 1837 in an effort to provide better burial facilities to the people of York than those offered by the overcrowded parish graveyards in the city. From 1855 until the mid 1940's it expanded to its current size of 24 acres. By the 1960's the cemetery was nearly full and no longer financially viable due in part to the opening of the cremetorium, it eventually went into liquidation in 1966. In the mid 80's York Cemetery Trust was formed, eventually taking ownership of the cemetery and its buildings in 1987. It is with their kind permission that this Cache is placed. The site currently has some 17,000 monuments and over 123,000 burials, with enough plot space to offer future burials for the next 20 years.

Important notes

While you are onsite there are a few basic safety rules, please observe these at all times.

York Cemetery and its Chapel are a working environment, funeral services and burials still take place on a regular basis. Please be mindful of this when looking for this cache, never interrupt a service or anyone paying their respects at a monument, and if need be return at a later date.

If you do choose to explore the cemetery please stick the paths and walkways. The ground around graves is uneven with many trip hazards, also you should not climb or touch any of the standing stones.

No dogs are allowed on site with the exception of registered assistance dogs.

Please check the cemetery closing times on the main gate when entering, a bell will be rung 15 minutes before the gates are locked.

The cache

This is just a small teaser cache located just inside the main gates , it should be fairly easy for you to find once you are on site. You will need a pen or pencil to sign the log as there is no room for one in the cache , please don't drop any trackables here either.

While you are here, why not explore the cemetery, pick some of the abundant brambles that are growing, visit the magnificent James Piggott Pritchard chapel or simply take a photo of your favourite monument, we'd love to see them.

There are other caches hidden in the cemetery for you to find too, why not try them all.
