Geocache Description:

Another Roadside Attraction Geotrail

South Carolina - Angel Oak

There is nothing better than a good road trip: driving down the open road, eating at tiny roadside diners, going 150 miles out of the way to take a selfie in front of … the Peachoid water tower! Oh Say, can you see … me with the world’s largest frying pan?

This geotrail honors those unique, odd, bizarre, fun, historic, campy, weird, and just downright interesting roadside attractions in North and South Carolina. The caches aren’t meant to be hard, it is a power-trail after all. None of the caches are hidden at the posted locations - but answer the question correctly and you will have a working set of coordinates. All of the hides are preform bottles.

The Angel Oak Tree, a Southern live oak, is estimated to be in excess of 400 - 500 years old, stands 66.5 ft tall, measures 28 ft in circumference, and produces shade that covers 17,200 square feet.  From tip to tip its longest branch distance is 187 ft. It holds the record for being the oldest Live Oak in South Carolina but it is not, as some claim, the oldest tree East of the Mississippi River, as there are plenty of cyprus trees in the south that are hundreds of years older. The tree grows on land that was a part of a 1717 land grant and named for a former estate owner, Justus Angel. The tree has a sad history and was believed to have been used in the lynchings of African American slaves. Local folklore tells stories of ghosts of former slaves appearing as angels around the tree. The oak was severely damaged in Hurricane Huge in 1989, but has recovered.
