In 1961, my family received news that a new highway was to built through this area and that we would have to move. As a 10 year old kid, it was the only house I had known. We were more fortunate however, than our next door neighbors. The highway department didn't remove their house but rather lifted it up and turned it sideways to face the new side street that would actually run through part of the space where our house had been. It still sits in that orientation today on the corner.
One other unusual note surrounding the transaction was that after the highway department purchased our house, my parents turned around and bought it back. Since the house had to be gone, instead of tearing it down, we re-purchased it at a much lower price and resold it to a family that had it moved to a new location. So my little house rode on a truck about 4 miles where it now sits a few blocks south of SE Military Dr. If I could remember where that spot is I would place a cache there too.
Happy hunting
