There is nothing better than a good road trip: driving down the open road, eating at tiny roadside diners, going 150 miles out of the way to take a selfie in front of … the Peachoid water tower! Oh Say, can you see … me with the world’s largest frying pan?
This geotrail honors those unique, odd, bizarre, fun, historic, campy, weird, and just downright interesting roadside attractions in North and South Carolina. The caches aren’t meant to be hard, it is a power-trail after all. None of the caches are hidden at the posted locations - but answer the question correctly and you will have a working set of coordinates. All of the hides are preform bottles.
With about 4,000 monkeys roaming the land and hanging from the trees, Monkey Island is home to one of only two Rhesus monkey colonies in the United States. But how did they get here? The answer is simply, Herpes. When a wave of Herpes virus swept through the monkey population in a Puerto Rican Primate Research Center in 1979, a few hundred non-infected rhesus monkeys were shipped to South Carolina and there they thrived ever since. With about 750 newborns each year, the island supplies the monkeys for medical testing of vaccines. South Carolina monkeys have been involved in testing vaccines for polio, AIDS, and even bio-terrorism. The island is well protected and off limits.
