There is nothing better than a good road trip: driving down the open road, eating at tiny roadside diners, going 150 miles out of the way to take a selfie in front of … the Peachoid water tower! Oh Say, can you see … me with the world’s largest frying pan?
This geotrail honors those unique, odd, bizarre, fun, historic, campy, weird, and just downright interesting roadside attractions in North and South Carolina. The caches aren’t meant to be hard, it is a power-trail after all. None of the caches are hidden at the posted locations - but answer the question correctly and you will have a working set of coordinates. All of the hides are preform bottles.
Georgia calls itself the Peach State, which is strange because South Carolina leads its neighbor in peach production. With an annual harvest of over 90,000 tons, South Carolina is the nation’s second largest peach producing state, following California. So how about them apples…er, peaches? The Peachoid, (a.k.a. the world's largest peach) is an enormous depiction of the pitted fruit was built in 1981 and can hold over a million gallons of water. However, many folks see the tower tower and their mind doesn’t register southern fruit, instead they think of a giant orange butt. The locals call it “Peach Butt” Tower. At one time there was even discussion to tear down the tower as a means to prevent “rubberneckers” from having collisions on I-85 when staring at the looming water tower. The Peachoid plays a staring role in the Netflix series House of Cards and received a much needed facelift in 2015.
