There is nothing better than a good road trip: driving down the open road, eating at tiny roadside diners, going 150 miles out of the way to take a selfie in front of … the Peachoid water tower! Oh Say, can you see … me with the world’s largest frying pan?
This geotrail honors those unique, odd, bizarre, fun, historic, campy, weird, and just downright interesting roadside attractions in North and South Carolina. The caches aren’t meant to be hard, it is a power-trail after all. None of the caches are hidden at the posted locations - but answer the question correctly and you will have a working set of coordinates. All of the hides are preform bottles.
Ambrose Tomlinson went to the Smokey Mountains to hand out Christian tracts to mountain people, hoping to convert them. Instead, Tomlinson was changed after he experienced a vision on a mountain and through his vision, he founded the Church of God of Prophecy. To commemorate his vision and new church he marked the spot of his revelation by building a religious theme park, one of the oldest in the country and one of North Carolina’s most successful tourist attractions. The main draw are the massive ten commandments written on a hillside with concrete letters 5 feet tall and 4 feet wide. Other attractions include “the world’s largest alter” a “world’s largest bible” a baptismal pool, a recreation of Golgatha, and a Jesus’ tomb. You can see all of this while enjoying a burger and homemade fudge.
