Geocache Description:

This cache is situated in the village of Koutroufa and is less than 100m from the main road which connects Astros with Leonidion. It is easy to drive through the village and not know that nearby is one of the oldest olive trees in the Peloponnese.

The famous olive tree at Koutroufa is over 2000 years old and still produces olives. The trunk is more than 11m in diameter.

Originally, this tree grew in an olive grove about 500m away from where it is now. But in 2010 an attempt was made to steal the tree and to take it out of Greece for sale overseas. Fortunately the transfer was stopped and the tree was replanted in its present location next to the village square.

At the end of July every year the villagers organise a festival called the "Tribute to Olive Tree" with a buffet of olive-based dishes and traditional music from all over Greece.
