Il tempio fu edificato nel medesimo luogo dove sorgeva la piccola chiesa del nuovo convento dei frati Cappuccini di Monforte. Fu subito considerata un santuario essendo la prima di Milano ad essere dedicata al Sacro Cuore di Gesù.
Nel bollettino del luglio 1878, edito proprio dal convento, si trovano notizie di questo nuovo edificio sacro: Scriviamo all'ombra di un nuovo Santuario. E' il primo che sia sorto in Milano, ove è sì immenso il bisogno del Cuore di Gesù.
La grande fioritura della devozione al Sacro Cuore si deve a santa Margherita Maria Alacoque che ne propagò il culto e che è ritratta nella pala dell'altare maggiore dell'attuale tempio votivo, insieme a San Francesco.
Il santuario sorse praticamente in aperta campagna e divenne luogo di profonda devozione nonché meta di pellegrinaggi. L'edificio era piccolo e, nel volgere di pochi anni, divenne troppo angusto per il numero di fedeli in costante aumento.
Il Farinate GeoCaching Team ha solo trovato una Chiesa milanese presso cui ancora non era stata piazzata una cache. Ecco fatto :)

The temple was built at the same site of the previous small church of the new convent of Capuchin friars at Monforte. It was immediately considered a sanctuary being the first of Milan devoted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
In the newsletter of July 1878, published just from the convent, there are reports of this new sacred building: We write in the shadow of a new sanctuary. It 'the first that arose in Milan, where is so immense the need of the Heart of Jesus.
The great flowering of devotion to the Sacred Heart is due to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque who spread the cult and that is portrayed in the main altarpiece of the votive temple, along with St. Francis.
The sanctuary was built practically in the open country and became a place of deep devotion and a pilgrimage site. The building was small and, in a few years, became too small for the number of faithful steadily increasing.
