Geocache Description:

This is a quick cache and dash situated at Holy Trinity Culmore Church.

Holy Trinty Church Culmore, Church of Ireland (Anglican) Diocese of Derry and Raphoe, belonging to the Christ Church, Culmore, Muff and St Peter's grouping.

Historical accounts tell of how a church was originally constructed for use by the garrison stationed at the nearby fort at Culmore Point. It is believed that worship was only ever performed twice in it by the garrison and it was instead used by King James army during the 1689 Siege of Derry as a field hospital and is rumoured to have once held 400 wounded Jacobite soldiers.

In 1840 the Irish Society acquired the lands of Culmore from the Crown and a new church was erected at the site. Known as Holy Trinity Church, construction was completed in 1867 and had a congregation of 274.

Culmore joined up with Muff Church in 1921 and in 1978 they joined together with St.Peter's Church, Belmont to become a Group.

Another amalgamation in September 2007 saw the Group Parishes of Culmore, Muff and St.Peter's Amalgamated with Christ Church on Infirmary Road, to become a group that still exists today.

Cache is a magnetic nano tucked in away from passing muggles. Please bring your own pen and tweezers may be useful to extract the log.

There is plenty of room to pull up on the pavement outside the church but I have added an additional parking location on a side street.

Please take care if you have children with you as it is on a busy road.

The Church Micro IE series is open to everyone; if you have a church you would like to place a cache at then please contact THE_Chris through Geocaching.com. This is to keep track of the numbers of the churches and give you the general format for the cache page. In the UK there are thousands in the series so we have some catching up to do! Also, if you currently have a published cache at a church that you would like to include in the series, get in contact and we can add it.
