Geocache Description:

Another Roadside Attraction Geotrail

North Carolina - C.S.S Neuse and Neuse II

There is nothing better than a good road trip: driving down the open road, eating at tiny roadside diners, going 150 miles out of the way to take a selfie in front of … the Peachoid water tower! Oh Say, can you see … me with the world’s largest frying pan?

This geotrail honors those unique, odd, bizarre, fun, historic, campy, weird, and just downright interesting roadside attractions in North and South Carolina. The caches aren’t meant to be hard, it is a power-trail after all. None of the caches are hidden at the posted locations - but answer the question correctly and you will have a working set of coordinates. All of the hides are preform bottles.

One is the rotted wreck of the original ship, the other is an impressive, brand-spanking new full-size replica, built by local fans of and history buffs. The original C.S.S. Neuse, didn't have a very distinguished history. After its construction was completed, it ran aground on its first and only voyage. It returned to its mooring, where it was later burned and scuttled by its own crew to keep it from being captured by invading Union troops.  However, it was historically significant because the wreck, or what’s left of it, is one of three ironclads from the era in existence.  The hull was raised from the river in the 1960s and moved to an open air warehouse in a park outside of town where it continued to rot away for the next 40 years before being moved to into a local museum.
