Geocache Description:

Another Roadside Attraction Geotrail

North Carolina - The Hunger Games, District 12

There is nothing better than a good road trip: driving down the open road, eating at tiny roadside diners, going 150 miles out of the way to take a selfie in front of … the Peachoid water tower! Oh Say, can you see … me with the world’s largest frying pan?

This geotrail honors those unique, odd, bizarre, fun, historic, campy, weird, and just downright interesting roadside attractions in North and South Carolina. The caches aren’t meant to be hard, it is a power-trail after all. None of the caches are hidden at the posted locations - but answer the question correctly and you will have a working set of coordinates. All of the hides are preform bottles.

The real District 12 is actually an abandoned mill town in North Carolina and that entire town is open, free of charge, to sightseers - plus its for sale.  Built as a planned community for textile mill workers and their families the town was abandoned in the 1960’s after the mill closed.  The town is located on a quiet country road, less than a mile from I-40.  The former home of a textile worker became Katniss’ house. The old company store served as the exterior for the Mellark family bakery.  Unlike the District 12 of the film, no fence or armed security force keeps anyone from entering or leaving the village.  The disrepair of the houses and the town’s Appalachian setting made it the ideal location for coal mining District 12.
