Geocache Description:

If you are a seasoned walker interested in seeing more of Crete than just the beaches, then this geocache is for you. Placed at an altitude of 1475 meters, this cache will offer you spectacular views of both the Bay of Mirabello and Aegean sea to the north and The Libyan sea to the south. This is not an easy geocache however, but if you perservere you will be rewarded with a fantastic walk and awesome views.

This geocache is placed near the church of Timios Stavros, which is located at the highest point of the mountain the locals call "Efendis", meaning Sir or Master. At 1475m, it is the highest peak in the Sitia mountain range. If you are a seasoned hiker than you can start your journey at the first parking waypoint on the map. This is at the entrance of the village of Thripti, a beautiful little village nestled between two mountain slopes and the beginning of the Ha gorge. The road up from Kato Horio on the main road is a bit dramatic, but is paved and offers great views. Once at the village parking there are signs describing the area as well as a map showing the walking route. The route is also signed as you go through the village. If you have an off road vehicle you can drive to the cache as well. Be advised: This is a steep and twisty dirt road and is not for the faint of heart. Alternatively you can leave your vehicle at the second parking waypoint and walk up the dirt road to the church. Just keep your search area near to the church and check the hint. I guarantee that if you want to take up this hike or drive up, you will not be disappointed. There is no other place in East Crete that can give you such amazing 360 degree views. Even the Minoans appreciated this spot for it's commanding location above the Ierapetra plain, as there is evidence of it being the site of a religious peak sanctuary dating to at least the Middle Minoan period(1700bc).
