Back in the early 1980's this wasn't here and nothing all the way to the corner, not even trees. We came down here and rode friends' mini-bikes around in this field. One summer I was able to bring my step-brother's little 50cc dirt bike that I was much too big for. I took the training wheels off and the screw out of the governor and let it rip. I hit a critter hole and dumped it, knocking the wind out of myself. I jumped back on when I came to. After a good afternoon of crashing our bikes we were hungry. We always got candy from Brian's Market, which was a party store then, or RJ's Market, which later became M&N, or ice cream at the DQ in the original building. Between the ravine and the little mall kitty-cornered from the DQ was a man who sold cars in his yard. He and his house are long gone. He must have disliked kids, he yelled at us often. Total "get off my lawn" type. On the opposite corner of Barnes Lake and 24 was a house that was half flea market. Sanford and Son-esque type junk sales. We used to rummage through the bikes he'd put up for sale. I don't think we ever bought any since we spent all of our quarters up the road. Many days were spent swimming at Barnes Lake or Miller Lake when it was either too hot to bike or we didn't have the gas to burn. Ah, to be a kid again!
